When Starting Over Makes Sense

Insulation removal and replacement is for attics and walls where the old material is doing more harm than good. Dry, clean insulation can stay; we seal around it and add more. But insulation that is wet from a roof leak, moldy, full of rodent droppings, smoke-damaged or packed so deep we cannot reach the ceiling leaks under it should come out.

How removal works

We run a large vacuum hose from a collection unit outside up into the attic. Loose cellulose and fiberglass go straight into bags without being carried through the house. Batts are bagged by hand. Once the attic floor is bare, we can see and seal every bypass, fix any rodent entry points you point out and start fresh.

Replacement

After sealing, we put in new loose fill to the depth on your quote, usually toward the R-49 the Wisconsin code summary lists for ceilings in Zone 6. Foam goes in kneewalls and slopes where fill will not work.

Vermiculite and spray foam

Vermiculite, a gray-brown pebbly fill found in some older attics, can contain asbestos. We do not disturb it; we recommend testing and, if needed, a licensed abatement contractor. Spray foam that was put in the wrong place has to be cut and scraped out, which takes longer than vacuuming loose fill.

Insulation Removal & Replacement Questions

How much does insulation removal cost?

HomeAdvisor lists $1 to $2 per square foot, with typical jobs around $600 to $1,200. Removal plus replacement averages about $1,852 in its data.

Why do people remove spray foam?

Usually because it was sprayed somewhere it should not be, such as over a roof deck that needs inspection, or because of a bad mix. It is cut and scraped out.

Should mouse-soiled insulation come out?

If it is full of droppings or nesting, yes. Removing it lets the attic be sealed and refilled cleanly.

What if I think my attic has vermiculite?

Leave it alone and have it tested. An abatement contractor handles removal if it contains asbestos.
